About Symbols

Widgit Symbols have been developed by Widgit Software in collaboration with language and communication experts. The complete Widgit Symbol Set consists of more than 11,000 symbols, which provide a clear visual representation of over 40,000 words and phrases. The Widgit Symbols are used to support information and communication with people of all ages, worldwide - in education, health, public and private services. The symbols in the Widgit Health range have been specifically developed in partnership with medical experts.

Advice on communicating with symbols

When interacting with a person who has a communication difficulty, it is important to:

  • Use clear, simple language.
  • Keep the number of words to a minimum.
  • Speak slowly and clearly.
  • Use gesture to support what you are saying, such as pointing to an injury or body part.
  • Where possible, also point to symbols as you speak.
  • Make sure that the person is viewing the symbols the right way up. If necessary, stand beside them to point to the symbols as you speak, rather than facing them.
  • When the person is communicating to you through symbols: as they point, repeat the word or sentence back to them and wait for possible confirmation that this is their meaning.
